EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since the last issue I made a four day journey to western New York State and spent a lot of time doing genealogy. Cattaraugus County proved very fertile for new information. I also dropped in on Fred Loop in Eldred, PA, for a brief pleasant visit. I have added new information obtained from this trip to various family group sheets included with this issue. This issue is heavily devoted to the family of Benjamin Loop, son of Capt. Peter Loop. A new subscriber, Rob Loop of Kingsville, Ontario, sent me a treasure trove of information, including photos, on the Canadian Loops. Subscription rates are $15 for one year, four issues July, October, January and April. The next volume will be Numbers 21 through 24. If you are retired on a fixed income and would find the $15 to be a hardship, you may subscribe for $5, as in the past. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1989 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Benjamin Loop of Ontario Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1989] Benjamin LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the last child of Capt. Peter LOOP and Maria BAILEY. He was born February 28, 1783, and christened June 8, 1783 at Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. He was known as Benjamin Franklin Loop, but the middle name does not appear on his baptismal record. Before 1814 he had moved to Ontario, married Agnes Kennedy, and had a son Henry, probably not their first child. In 1817, they were residing in Hallowell Township in Prince Edward County, Ontario, when they're daughter Ann was born. Benjamin's brother Nathaniel also resided in Hallowell. Benjamin's wife, Agnes Jane Kennedy, was born May 8, 1788, probably in Canada. Benjamin and Nathaniel probably moved their families from Prince Edward County to Middlesex County about 1825, settling around London, Ontario. It is not clear how long Benjamin and Agnes lived in the London area. By 1836 their son John had established a farm in Mersea Township, Essex County. By 1845 (perhaps well before) Benjamin and Agnes had established squatter's rights to land in Gosfield Township, next to Mersea, in Essex County. Benjamin and Agnes do not appear in the 1851 census of Essex County. Nor do they show up in the 1850 census of Michigan. So it is likely that they moved to Flint, Michigan, in late 1850. There they lived with their daughter Mary (LOOP) GRIFFITH and her husband. Agnes Loop died in Flint, February 15, 1860, Benjamin died January 19, 1865. They are both buried in the Bristol Road Cemetery, in Flint, Michigan. The birthdate inscribed on Benjamin's tombstone (December 12, 1781) conflicts with the birthdate given on his baptismal record. The children of Benjamin as listed in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Essex County, Ontario, and listed in the order there presented, though it may be wrong: + 1. Joseph LOOP, m. Mary PELTON. + 2. John LOOP, b. about 1815, in Canada, m. Mary Lucinda ROBERTS in 1836, d. February 8, 1887, in Kingsville, Essex County, Ontario. 3. Jacob LOOP, possibly the Jacob Lupp whose residence is listed as "Hallet" Township on an 1830 Ontario land record. This is probably Hullet Township in Huron County, Ontario. 4. Henry LOOP, b. about 1814, in Ontario, m. about 1850 to Mary ______, she born about 1832 in Canada. In the 1950 census of Percy Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Henry is single. One year later, in the 1851 census, they are married and have a child John who will be two years old on his next birthday. 5. Warren LOOP, possibly the Warren Loop aged 19 in November, 1851 who married a Frances RAYMOND, both of Mersea. There is a Warren LOOP, aged 38, a widow, censused as a laborer on the farm of Abraham and Catherin ROOME, in Oxford township, Bothwell County, Ontario, in 1871. 6. Ann LOOP, b. September 24, 1817, in Hallowell, Prince Edward County, Ontario, baptized there November 16, 1817, at the Picton Methodist Church. She married John RICHMOND. 7. Sarah LOOP, m. April 28, 1845, to Theodore Scratch, both of Gosfield. 8. Margaret LOOP, no information. 9. Mary LOOP, b. April 30, 1822, in Canada, m. before 1846, Orrin Griffith, m. (2nd) ______ MUMA. They all lived in Flint, Michigan. She died December 29, 1885 and is buried in Flint, Michigan. Orrin L. Griffith was born February 28, 1821, and died September 4, 1862. 10. Elizabeth LOOP, b. about 1828, m. October 30, 1849, to John McMANEBEE, of Colchester (she of Gosfield). 11. Hannah LOOP, no information. Joseph LOOP [Benjamin(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the first child of Benjamin Franklin LOOP and Agnes Jane KENNEDY was born in Canada. He is probably the Joseph Loop whose residence is listed as Caradoc Township, Ontario, on an 1837 land record. Caradoc Township is about 10 miles west of London, Ontario, in Middlesex County. Prior to 1845 he may have moved around some, as his child born in 1842 is listed on his marriage record as being born in Michigan, and his sister born in about 1843 is listed as having been born in Oxford, east of London. On August 24, 1845, he bought Lot 6, Concession 3, of Plympton Township, Lambton County, Ontario. He sold the lot August 29, 1867. On August 12, 1869, he bought Lot 19, Concession 2, in Mersea Township, Essex County, from William LOOP, probably his nephew. He married Mary PELTON before 1842. They had the following children: 1. Joseph LOOP, JR., b. May 1, 1842, in Canada, or possibly Michigan, m. (1st) Elizabeth COLLIER. She was b. about 1845 in Canada, the daughter of Thomas COLLIER (born England) and Sarah ______. She d. April 18, 1874 probably in Michigan. He m. (2nd) Sarah Matilda EMIGH, b. about 1848 in Michigan. He d. MAY 12, 1881 probably in Worth, Sanilac, Michigan. Children by his first wife: a. Mary LOOP, b. about 1865, in Canada, d. young. b. Hannah (Nellie) LOOP, b. about 1867, in Canada, m. 1 MAR 1892, Thomas DAWSON. c. Sarah LOOP, b. November 1869, in Michigan, d. before 1880. d. Melvina LOOP, b. about 1870, in Michigan, m. James MACKEY. e. Joseph LOOP, b. October 9, 1871, in Michigan, m. November 10, 1893, Effie May HEDRICK. He d. February 10, 1938, at Port Huron, St. Clair, MI. f. Elizabeth LOOP, April 3, 1873, in Michigan, m. Elmer PHILLIPS, d. Detroit, Michigan. Children by his second wife: g. Omer LOOP, b. December 1, 1875, in Michigan. h. Bertie LOOP, b. September 15, 1881. 2. Anne LOOP, b. about 1843 in "Oxford", possibly Oxford Twp, Oxford County, Ontario, m. January 15, 1864, Luman BURTCH of Plympton Twp. He was b. about 1842 in Michigan. 3. Washington LOOP, b. April 4, 1847, in Plympton Township, Lambton County, Ontario, m. (1) December 27, 1868, Helen EMIGH, m. (2) Edith THORNTON. She was b. August, 1861, in Michigan. He d. October 17, 1923 and is buried in the Lakeport, Michigan cemetery in Burtchville Township, St. Clair County, MI. His widow d. in 1950. His children were: a. Ellis LOOP, b. April 4, 1878, d. March 4, 1879. b. Maude LOOP, b. October 20, 1882, d. in Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan. b. Frank LOOP, b. October 8, 1883, d. in Worth Twp, Sanilac County, Michigan. c. Minnie LOOP, b. Donald LOOP, b. Jeddo, St. Clair County, MI, buried in Garden City, Wayne County, MI. c. Harold Lewis LOOP, b. April 28, 1919 at Jeddo, m. Thelma POWELL. They divorced. 4. Mary LOOP, b. about 1848 in Plympton Twp, Lambton County, Ontario, m. December 30, 1864, William STEADMAN of Enniskillen Twp, Lambton County. He was b. about 1843 in Plympton Twp. 5. Samuel LOOP, b. April 29, 1849, d. February 1, 1878. John LOOP [Benjamin(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the second child of Benjamin Franklin LOOP and Agnes Jane KENNEDY. He was born about 1815. One county history has his birth as "near London, Ontario", but this is unlikely, as his sister was born in Prince Edward County, Ontario, in 1817, which would have the family migrating in the wrong direction. One census has him born in the U.S. and another in Canada. The families of Benjamin Loop and Nathaniel Loop probably moved from Prince Edward County to Middlesex county around 1825 settling near London. In 1836, John, single and around age 21, left Middlesex County, possibly alone, to settle a homestead in Mersea Township, Essex County. That same year he married Mary Lucinda (Lucy) ROBERTS, who was born in Mersea Township in 1816. They lived in Mersea at least until 1861, but they both died at nearby Kingsville in Gosfield Township, he on February 8, 1887 and she on February 18, 1888. They are buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington. Their children: 1. Lovisa LOOP (adopted), b. about 1833, Point Pelee, Mersea Township, Essex County, Ontario, Canada, m. April 4, 1850, Michael MOONEY of Mersea. They had at least one daughter Lucinda MOONEY who married a Henry LOOP of Flint, Michigan. We do not know who that Henry LOOP was. 2. William LOOP, b. about 1837, Canada, m. Sarah DRUYOR (widow of ______ DELLYOR?) daughter of Frank and Arrilla (ALLEN) DRUYOR. They lived in Leamington, Mersea Township. He died in 1914 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in that town. She died in 1928. They had children: a. Ellen LOOP, d. in infancy. b. Xavier LOOP, may have d. in infancy. c. Leonard LOOP, who may have married an indian girl. 3. Joseph LOOP, b. October 20, 1839, at Point Pelee, Mersea Township, Essex County, Ontario, "in a log cabin". He never married, but took as a foster child, George MANERY (1872 - 1937). George MANERY married Sarah LOOP, daughter of Benjamin Franklin LOOP, Jr. Joseph Loop was a seaman on the schooner "Sweeper" of Toledo on Lake Erie for 11 years before going into the fishing business with his brothers Henry and Ira. He sold out of that business and went into farming in Mersea Township. He died March 9, 1921 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington. 4. Henry LOOP, b. about 1840 at Point Pelee, Essex, Ontario, m. 1863, Jemima ______. He and his brother Ira were pound net fishermen on Lake Erie. Henry died in 1922 and is buried in Greenhill Cemetery in Kingsville, Essex, Ontario. 5. Ellis LOOP, b. about 1841, d. in infancy. 6. Charles LOOP, b. about 1842, in Canada, m. Mary McBRAYNE. He died in Michigan. 7. Benjamin Franklin LOOP, Jr., b. about 1844 at Point Pelee, Essex, Ontario, m. Josephine FOX, daughter of Theodore FOX. She was born between 1844 and 1849. He was a farmer. He died in 1929, she in 1925. They are buried together in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington, Essex, Ontario. They had children: a. Matilda N. LOOP, b. about 1869, in Ontario, m. Frederick JOHNSON. b. Charlotte LOOP, m. Halton HICKSON. h. Bertha L. LOOP, m. George CAMPBELL i. William Albert LOOP, never married. 8. Ira LOOP, b. October 21, 1847 at Point Pelee, Essex, Ontario, m. December 30, 1868, Clarissa Jane GAUVEREAU. She was born March 18, 1847 at Gosfield. They lived in Kingsville where he fished with his brother Henry. He died March 12, 1908. She died at Kingsville in 1922. They are buried at the Greenhill Cemetery in Kingsville. Their children: a. Mary LOOP, b. 1868, d. 1868. b. Mary Lucinda (Minn) LOOP, b. September 24, 1871, m. Loop - Thanks for the article on Theodore Murray Loop. Although I did not have a copy of the original, I did have the version that appeared in one of Garold Loop's notebooks. This I excerpted and it appeared in one of the Loop Scoop issues in Theodore Murray Loop's family group sheet. 2. George Capes - asks if I plan to publish more on the first generation of immigrants. Of course, I will publish any new material that surfaces. Before having "The Early Loop Family in America" printed and bound, I will revisit all the chapters, but probably not reprint any in the Loop Scoop. And it will still be a number of years before that happens anyway. 3. Chauncey and Sue Loop, I will make up back issues for $15 per volume (4 issues = 1 year) or $4 for a single issue. You can probably forget Volume 1, as all the information in that volume has been either republished or superceded. This is the second issue of Volume 6. Anyone else needing back issues, now would be a good time to order. I'd like to keep the number of runs to the copy shop to a minimum. Subscriptions are for volumes. So anyone subscribing between now and July will receive all four issues (issues 21, 22, 23, and 24) of Volume 6. If any of you subscribed in the middle of a volume and did not receive all the issues in that volume, let me know, and I'll send them no charge. 4. Rob Loop - of Kingsville, Ontario, becomes our first subscriber from Benjamin Loop's line. Rob is a very active researcher and just sent me a care package of Loop information including photos of family members and tombstones. Rob, I'll get you those back issues you wanted, thanks for you generosity. Do you need any of this material back? 5. The tombstone for Benjamin F. Loop (see Vital Data 1) is almost certainly incorrect as to the date of birth. This should come as no great surprise, as tombstones are notoriously inaccurate. There are only two likely candidates for Benjamin's father: Capt. Peter Loop, and his brother John Loop. Capt. Peter's son Benjamin was born 28 FEB 1783. John Loop had a daughter born April 1780 and another daughter born September 1782, so it is unlikely he had a son born December 1781, particularly since any such birth is missing from the church records between the two daughters. The 1860 census of Michigan gives Benjamin's age as 76, putting his birth year around 1784. It is an annoying fact that some tertiary evidence seems to support John Loop as the father of Benjamin. But the stronger evidence supports Capt. Peter as the father. 6. Jim Fry reports finding a record showing that Albert M. Loop was Clerk of the Court in Rock Island County, Illinois, from 8 November 1853 to 4 December 1854. This is Albert Mortimer Loop, son of William Ferris Loop, son of Christian Loop, son of Capt. Peter Loop. He was a physician in Nelson, PA, most of his life, but spent a few years in Illinois. Why he would have been a clerk of court in Illinois is a mystery to me. 7. I'm including a family group sheet for John Loop, brother of Capt. Peter Loop. There is a lot of mystery for us surrounding this family. John and Ruth had a child in 1763. Then there is no record of another child until 1777, followed by children in 1781 and 1782. We don't have any idea what happened to any of the members of this family, either the parents, the known children or any children that might have been born between 1763 and 1777. Two of the known children were males. But we simply don't have stray family groups to hook them to as ancestors. The family just seems to disappear. 8. Received another letter from Norman Loop. My guess that his line was Theodore Murray Loop was based on his middle name, Monroe, which which figures in Theodore's family, and on his address in California, as that's where Theodore's family lived. But I was wrong. Norman is descended from George Loop. Several other subscribers are on that same line. George was the son of a Christian Loop, whose parents, unfortunately, we haven't yet been able to ascertain. Norman, I'll send you family group sheets containing all the information we have on your line. 9. Mary Loop - welcome to the Loop Scoop. Sorry this newsletter is a little late. Regular subscribers are used to my tardiness. You have your husbands line correct with one exception. Christian was not the son of Gerlach Loop, he was the son of Jacob Lupp of Germany, who never came over to the new world. The line goes ... Christian, Jacob, Sebastian, Anthony. Anthony died sometime before 1646 or so. I can send you the family group sheets, but I'll wait to see if you order back issues, as the group sheets will be contained in the back issues. 10. Ross Roby sends along an intriguing brochure on upcoming lectures at the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. On Tuesday, 27 MAR 1990, at 2 PM, the topic will be "Westerwald Research - A Study of Some 18th Century German Immigrants", by Annette K. Burgert. She worked with Hank Jones on the book "Westerwald to America". Then on Tuesday, 24 APR 1990, Roger Joslyn will present "Research in Up-State New York". Probably not too many people know it but Roger has been doing some Loop research for a client who is a subscriber to the Scoop, and so we all benefit from his research. I doubt that I will be able to make either of these events, but perhaps someone out there can. 11. I may have correspondence in my pile from others of you, but I have to get this issue out, so it will have to wait until next time.
